What GSM Is Best for T-Shirts? 180 GSM vs 240 GSM vs 300 GSM

Table of Contents

Choosing the right fabric weight is one of the most important decisions when developing a custom T-shirt. Fabric GSM affects not only how thick or lightweight the T-shirt feels, but also its structure, drape, comfort and production cost.

At ASNA Apparel, we work with T-shirt fabrics ranging from approximately 160 GSM to 300 GSM. There is no single best GSM for T-shirts for every design. The right choice depends on the garment style, season, desired hand feel and the final appearance a clothing brand wants to achieve.

From our production experience, many overseas customers choose around 230–235 GSM for custom T-shirts. This weight provides a good balance between structure, comfort and breathability without making the garment unnecessarily heavy for warm-weather wear.

What Does GSM Mean in T-Shirt Fabric?

GSM stands for grams per square meter. It measures the weight of one square meter of fabric.

In simple terms, a lower GSM generally means a lighter and thinner fabric, while a higher GSM generally means a heavier and thicker fabric.

For example, a 180 GSM T-shirt will normally feel lighter than a 300 GSM T-shirt made from a comparable fabric construction.

However, GSM should not be considered alone. Fiber composition, knitting structure, finishing and washing treatments can also affect the final hand feel, drape and appearance of a T-shirt.

180 GSM vs 240 GSM vs 300 GSM T-Shirts

The following table provides a quick comparison of several common fabric weights used in custom T-shirt production.

Fabric Weight Feel Structure Best For
180 GSM Lightweight Soft Summer T-Shirts
230–240 GSM Medium Weight Balanced / Structured Everyday T-Shirts / Streetwear
260 GSM Medium-Heavy More Structured Premium Streetwear
300 GSM Heavyweight Thick / Firm Heavyweight Streetwear

180 GSM T-Shirts

Around 180 GSM is suitable for brands looking for a relatively lightweight T-shirt.

The fabric generally feels lighter on the body and can work well for summer collections, lightweight basics and brands that prefer a softer, less structured appearance.

However, if the GSM becomes too low, the garment may not provide enough structure for some oversized or streetwear designs. This is why the desired silhouette should be considered before choosing a lightweight fabric.

230–240 GSM T-Shirts

Around 230–240 GSM is one of the fabric weight ranges we frequently recommend for custom T-shirt production.

From our production experience, many overseas customers choose approximately 235 GSM. There is a practical reason for this.

Very lightweight fabrics may not provide enough structure for certain designs, while very heavyweight fabrics can feel unnecessarily warm. Since T-shirts are commonly worn in warmer weather, a medium-weight fabric often provides a better balance.

A 230–240 GSM cotton fabric can create a more substantial and structured appearance while remaining comfortable enough for everyday wear.

For this reason, when a customer does not specifically request an extremely lightweight or heavyweight fabric, we often recommend starting with approximately 230 GSM 100% cotton and then adjusting the fabric according to the design and desired hand feel.

260 GSM T-Shirts

For brands looking for a more substantial T-shirt without moving all the way to a very heavy 300 GSM fabric, approximately 260 GSM can be another option.

Compared with 230–240 GSM fabric, 260 GSM generally provides a heavier hand feel and a more structured finished appearance. It can work particularly well for premium streetwear, oversized silhouettes and designs where the customer wants the garment to feel more substantial.

The following custom T-shirt was produced using 260 GSM fabric. The additional fabric weight gives the finished garment a more substantial and structured appearance compared with lighter T-shirt fabrics.

300 GSM T-Shirts

300 GSM is a heavyweight option for T-shirts.

Compared with lighter fabrics, it normally creates a thicker, heavier and firmer hand feel. It can work particularly well for heavyweight streetwear T-shirts and designs where the customer wants a strong, structured silhouette.

However, heavier is not automatically better.

A 300 GSM T-shirt can feel too heavy or warm for customers who want a breathable summer garment. This is why we do not recommend choosing fabric weight simply because a higher GSM sounds more premium.

The fabric weight should match the actual garment design and the wearing experience the brand wants to create.

How GSM Affects T-Shirt Fabric Cost

Fabric GSM also affects manufacturing cost.

When comparing similar fabrics with the same width and composition, a lower-GSM fabric generally provides more usable fabric length per kilogram. This means more garments may be produced from the same fabric weight.

A higher-GSM fabric provides less fabric length per kilogram because more material is used in each square meter. As a result, fewer garments can generally be produced from the same kilogram of fabric.

This difference affects fabric consumption and ultimately the manufacturing cost of each T-shirt.

This is one reason why an accurate custom T-shirt quotation should consider fabric GSM rather than only garment quantity.

Does Higher GSM Mean Better Quality?

No. A higher GSM means a heavier fabric, but it does not automatically mean better quality.

A well-produced 180 GSM T-shirt can be more appropriate than a 300 GSM T-shirt if the brand wants a lightweight summer garment.

Similarly, a 300 GSM fabric may be a better choice for a heavyweight streetwear design that requires a firm and structured silhouette.

Fabric quality depends on multiple factors, including fiber quality, yarn, knitting, finishing, shrinkage control, sewing and overall garment construction.

The best GSM for T-shirts is therefore the fabric weight that produces the intended final result, rather than simply the highest number available.

How We Choose GSM for a Custom T-Shirt

When a customer sends us a T-shirt design, we do not recommend fabric weight based on GSM alone.

We first review the design and understand the customer’s expectations for the finished garment. Important factors include the desired fabric thickness, hand feel, fit and silhouette, season, fabric composition, printing or embroidery requirements, target price and reference garment.

T-Shirt Fabric and Color Selection for Custom Clothing Production

Fabric GSM, composition, color and hand feel should be selected according to the T-shirt design and the desired finished appearance.

For example, if the customer wants a structured oversized T-shirt, we may recommend a medium-to-heavy fabric. If the customer wants a lightweight summer T-shirt, a lower GSM may be more appropriate.

If the customer is unsure, approximately 230–235 GSM 100% cotton is often a practical starting point based on our experience producing custom T-shirts for overseas clothing brands.

Fabric Sourcing and Inspection at ASNA Apparel

Fabric selection is based on each garment design, including the required GSM, composition, hand feel and final appearance. Fabrics are checked before custom clothing production to help ensure they meet the project requirements.

Cotton T-Shirt Shrinkage and Fabric Pre-Shrinking

Fabric weight is not the only factor that needs to be controlled before T-shirt production.

100% cotton fabric can have noticeable shrinkage after washing. If this is not considered before cutting and sewing, the final garment measurements may change after the customer washes the T-shirt.

For this reason, we normally pre-shrink cotton fabric before T-shirt production.

Steam pre-shrinking is commonly used to stabilize the fabric before cutting.

For projects with stricter shrinkage requirements, the fabric can also undergo a more intensive washing process before production. This method has a higher processing cost but can reduce the remaining shrinkage to a very low level.

The appropriate pre-shrinking method depends on the fabric, garment specifications and the customer’s requirements.

Which GSM Should You Choose for Your T-Shirt?

There is no universal answer when choosing the best GSM for T-shirts.

If you want a lightweight T-shirt for warm weather, consider a lower GSM such as around 180 GSM.

If you want a balanced T-shirt with good structure without excessive weight, approximately 230–240 GSM is a strong option and one of the ranges we frequently recommend.

If you want a slightly heavier and more substantial streetwear T-shirt, around 260 GSM can be considered.

If you want a thick, firm and heavyweight streetwear T-shirt, approximately 300 GSM may be more suitable.

The final decision should always be based on the garment design, intended hand feel and wearing conditions rather than choosing the highest GSM available.
